Hammock camping is something that is seeing a lot of popularity, especially among backpackers. Sleeping in a hammock also is gaining favor over camping in a tent on the hard ground. One of the biggest draws is that a camping hammock folds up into a small, lightweight package that is easy to carry or pack. All you need a couple trees, which aren't hard to come by when outdoors in camping areas, to get things set up.

Camping Hammock FAQs

1. Are camping hammocks comfortable?

Hammocks can be very comfortable if you get one that is the right size. Always look at the dimensions to make sure you will comfortably fit on it. In addition, you may have to think about the exposure when sleeping in a hammock. There is nothing to protect you from the elements or bugs. You may need to add netting or even some type of covering to make it comfortable for the camping conditions. It can also take time to get used to the nature of a hammock. They move when you move, which may require some adjustment in your sleeping style.

2. Are camping hammocks comfortable?

Be prepared is the single best tip. You need to plan for the conditions by having netting and taking a sleeping bag. You also need to make sure you have everything you need to hang the hammock, including straps that can fit around trees. You may even need warmer clothes than you normally would. Also, always try out your hammock before you take off for the night if you can. Hang it in your backyard for a trial run.

3. How do I hang a hammock?

Your hammock will come with some hanging instructions. Generally, though, you will attach each end to a strap or rope and then connect the strap or rope around a tree or other structure to hold the hammock up. You want to be sure it is far enough off the ground so that when you get in, you won't sink so far down that you touch the ground. Typically, you need about two feet of space between the hanging hammock and the ground.

4. Why is hammock camping so popular?

Most people like hammock camping because it means they have to take less stuff with them. This is ideal when backpacking, but it is helpful even if you are driving your vehicle to a campsite. Also, hammocks are comfortable. There is a reason why they are known as a place to relax. Sleeping in a hammock can make for a great night in the outdoors.

5. Can anyone sleep in a hammock?

Most adults should not have an issue sleeping in a hammock. Getting in and out of the hammock may produce a challenge for some, but with assistance, even that should not be too hard for most people. Older children also should be fine. However, younger children and infants may not do so well. They can fall out or otherwise be injured when left to sleep in a hammock, so always supervise your little ones when using one.

6. What type of netting should I use?

If you are worried about bugs, using mosquito netting with your hammock is a good idea. There are some hammocks that come with netting, but you can also buy netting made for use with hammocks. This type of netting will easily hang up in a similar fashion to the hammock, making them easy to use together.

How We Review

When reviewing the hammocks on our list, we made sure to read up on each one. We gathered information about each hammock from the manufacturer, retail sites and reviews from customers. We made sure that we weeded out bias and got to the truth so we could present you with the most accurate information. We feel our reviews are completely unbiased and offer the best idea of what to expect from each hammock. You should feel confident using the information we present below to help you make a buying decision.

Price Range for Camping Hammocks

Most of the hammocks on our list are between $20 and $40. That is the general price range for a double-sized camping hammock. You may find some that run a bit cheaper, but often the ones that cost less are single hammocks, so they will not be as big. In addition, some brand names are more recognized than others, so they may price their hammocks higher. The most expensive hammock on our list is from Eagles Nest Outfitters. ENO is a top name brand and often the standard against which other hammocks are measured, so it is no surprise this hammock is almost $70. If you go much under $25 for a double hammock, you will probably sacrifice quality, so keep that in mind. Generally, though, you should consider reviews to know if a hammock is underpriced due to cheap construction or if it is priced higher due to quality and not just demand.

    Verdict

It was pretty much impossible for us to say there is one hammock that stands out above the rest on our list. This is because the reviews for all of them were pretty good. There really wasn't any hammock that stood out as being bad or not worth the money. One thing that did stand out was that the companies making these hammocks seem to have a really nice grasp on how to keep customers happy. Complaints were all handled professionally and quickly with many companies offering free products. The solutions offered seemed to please the buyers.  All the companies on our list were on top of customer service and were very responsive

The biggest issue with most of the hammocks seemed to be the hanging ropes and straps, but almost all brands sell upgraded and improved ones separately. Those included are usually basic in style and quality, so this is an add-on that many people who have purchased hammocks in the past know to expect they will need. However, for a first timer, this can be frustrating. There were a few companies that do include good straps, though, such as Sunyear and Kootek.

Enthusiasts often tout Eagles Nest Outfitters as the top brand, but it actually got far more mixed reviews than other hammocks. Some people said it lived up to hype while others were disappointed in overall quality, feeling it was not as well made as other brands. Some users even had splitting issues after a short time of use, but ENO did offer quick solutions that made the users happy. However, as the most expensive option on the list, many users may be disappointed to learn they have to buy hanging straps separately because they are not included.

Overall, we think that any choice on our list would be a good choice. Just make sure to pay attention to size and what comes with your chosen product in order to get the hammock that will work best for you.
